Developmental editing (DE) is concerned with big picture aspects of the manuscript. The DE focuses on elements like the strength of the argument or major points, the rationale underlying the evidence used to substantiate them, the narrative’s organization and flow, and finally, the manuscript’s tone. When these elements align, readers can better engage with the work.
“Reba has a natural ability to make your thoughts, feelings and words come alive and jump off the page and she definitely helped me pinpoint my writing voice and drive. It’s hard to crack me being that I’m a business owner myself so the fact that this woman, single-handedly, uncovered my writing pain-point is huge and speaks volumes to her abilities and gift!”
Copyediting is the practice of reviewing and revising texts for clarity and consistency. With the client’s audience and style preferences in mind, the copy editor ensures the accuracy of elements like punctuation, numerical representation, text formatting, and other mechanical details that make the text cohesive and clear.
Inclusive editing is the review of written and video content with the goal of enhancing reader engagement. Considering the manuscript’s subject matter, the inclusive editor (also called authenticity or sensitivity editor) fact checks, edits for potentially off-putting words or phrases, and conducts a contextual examination for narratives or visual representations that risk reinforcing long held biases and stereotypes. Such editing allows for welcoming as broad an audience to the work as possible.
“Reba brings an exceptional combination of analytical rigor, intellectual curiosity, and editorial precision to every project. Her reviews consistently demonstrate a deep commitment to accuracy, evidence-based framing, and contextual integrity. She has a remarkable ability to identify issues that others miss—not only factual inaccuracies, but also places where context, framing, or representation undermine the quality and credibility of content.”
